Mangrove forests protect coastlines against erosion and have a high biodiversity score. These trees have a high capability to absorb carbon emissions from the atmosphere, and they have a high potential to support climate change mitigation efforts.
Blue Carbon Tanzania (BCT) is based in Tanzania, where the team conducts community mangrove restoration for community empowerment and carbon removal. To achieve the ambitious goals, the team works with partners, such as airlines and manufacturers, as part of carbon offsetting and climate change mitigation at large.
The company aims to plant one million mangroves across 10,000 hectares in Tanzania by 2030 through support from partners worldwide. Blue Carbon Tanzania works with a research partner in Germany to establish the carbon offsetting potential for the planted mangroves and develop customised prices for corporates and partners to buy the planted mangroves and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts.
The team is led by Debora Benjamen, who has 6 years of experience in mangrove restoration and on-groundwork with communities. The team has started mobilising partners' resources worldwide to achieve the goals. So far, the team has worked with three communities and planted mangroves, providing coastal protection and carbon removal. In the Carbon Removal ClimAccelerator and with support from Munich Re and ERGO, the founders validated their business model and market strategy.
