Unlocking the full potential of biochar for soil and fertiliser improvement

Point2Hectare is helping farmers and fertiliser producers to make and use highly efficient biochar fertilisers. The company’s first product - NitroChar - reduces nitrogen losses, increases crop yields under challenging conditions and supports regenerative farming. Moreover, the biochar is certified for carbon removal and supports healthy soil functions. The team develops attractive fertiliser products for fertiliser companies that want to decarbonise their productions and expand their market share under a licensing model.

NitroChar is a patent-pending urea-biochar fertiliser with a unique formulation. It is designed to unlock the enormous potential of biochar to control the dynamics of nitrogen in the soil. The production is easy to scale and integrate into existing nitrogen fertiliser production systems. The field application is made with standard fertiliser-spreading machinery.

NitroChar has a positive climate impact at every stage from production to its soil effects. Further, the team's other regenerative farming solutions, such as RootChar®, also have a large impact potential in carbon removal and avoidance.

Point2Hectare’s vision is to unlock the full potential of biochar for soil and fertiliser improvement. The experienced team has a diverse skill set. Chief Technical Officer Dr. Jan Mumme is one of the leading biochar experts and an award-winning agricultural entrepreneur. Diana Smite, Chief Marketing Officer as well as Chief Sales Officer, has held several commercial roles building partnerships with international corporate clients. Chief Executive Officer Max Billinger has been a plant manager and recently a business leader responsible for global footprint decisions.

Since October 2023, the team has been collaborating with a leading nitrogen fertiliser manufacturer in Germany and plans to continue with product tests involving production experts. In 2024, the team will apply for grant funding to pay for a demonstrator unit, an important investment to achieve market readiness. Point2Hectare expects its first license deals to materialise during 2026. In the Carbon Removal ClimAccelerator and with support from Munich Re and ERGO, the team has refined their go-to-market strategy.
