Tackling Climate Change Together
Algal blooms are growing and becoming more frequent worldwide partly with a negative impact on the environment like the Sargassum Algae in the Caribbean. In their lifetimes, algae intake carbon and re-release it upon decomposition. RubisCO2 stores this carbon dioxide in the form of valuable byproducts whilst generating energy.
RubisCO2 has designed a flexible, modular, and easily scalable system. The company's specialised reactors convert decomposing algae into energy and biochar, a stable form of solid carbon. The central step in the process is pyrolysis, a method where organic materials are heated in the absence of oxygen. This process causes the materials to decompose into flammable gases and biochar. With this, RubisCO2 can offer extremely affordable, yet high-quality biochar and carbon offsets.
The RubisCO2 team is working to create a realistic pathway to mitigate climate change. With the support of strong partners, the German-based start-up is developing a robust business model to enable sustainable growth.
RubisCO2 recently inaugurated its (TRL6) prototype and opened an experimental plant in southern Mexico. In the Carbon Removal ClimAccelerator and with support from Munich Re and ERGO, the team lay the foundations to scale up.
