 Edward Ler

After 24 years with Munich Re Group, Clemens Muth, currently Chief Underwriting Officer at ERGO Group, has decided to leave the company at the end of 2023 with the expiry of his current contract to pursue other personal interests. Edward Ler, currently Executive Vice President and Head of Southeast Asia region at Chubb Asia Pacific in Singapore, has been appointed as his successor as of 1st January 2024.

“The work of Clemens Muth has been of utmost importance for the positive development of ERGO Group,” says Markus Rieß, CEO of ERGO Group. “Since the start of our ERGO Strategy Programme in 2016, Clemens Muth contributed to further strengthening the competitiveness of our products and to introducing client-centric innovations. Under his leadership, the global matrix organisation in underwriting was successfully developed and implemented, governing today the underwriting process across all ERGO insurance companies. Personally, I very much regret Mr. Muth’s decision to leave ERGO and I wish him all the best for his future endeavours.”

“With Edward Ler, we are further strengthening the international profile of our Board of Management,” continues Markus Rieß. “He has a proven track record in building excellent underwriting capabilities and brings strong business acumen to drive execution in the European and Asian insurance markets. Together with the Board, I am very much looking forward to working with Edward Ler.”

Clemens Muth joined Munich Re in 1999. After various positions held within Munich Re, he came to ERGO in 2007 as Head of Strategy, prior to his appointment as Chief Sales Officer of ERGO Direkt. In 2010, Mr. Muth was appointed to the Board of Management of ERGO Group AG and as Chair of the Board of DKV Deutsche Krankenversicherung AG. He has been the Chief Underwriting Officer of ERGO Group AG responsible for the insurance business across all lines of business since 2018.

Edward Ler holds more than 20 years of experience in insurance underwriting as well as product management with Allianz, RSA and Chubb in diverse markets and across product lines.

To ensure a smooth transition, Mr. Ler will become a member of the Board of Management of ERGO Group AG as of 1st October 2023 and act as Co-Chief Underwriting Officer alongside Clemens Muth until the end of the year.

Frauke Fiegl, member of the Board of Management of ERGO Deutschland AG, already in charge of the Health segment, is planned to succeed Mr. Muth as Chair of the Board of DKV Deutsche Krankenversicherung AG as of 1st January 2024.
